Common questions

Does robots.txt remove a page from Google?

No. It blocks crawling, not indexing. Use noindex if a page must stay out of results, and do not block it in robots.txt at the same time.

Are rules case-sensitive?

Paths are generally case-sensitive; user-agent tokens are not. Test with the live file rather than assuming.

What does Disallow: / mean?

It asks every crawler to stay out of the entire site. Only use it on a site you genuinely want excluded.
