What happens to your email after you sign up
Where your address goes, and why the inbox fills up
You hand over an email to create an account, and within a week the marketing mail starts. That is not an accident — it is the normal path of an address inside a business.
The usual journey
- Account record. The address is stored for login, receipts and security notices.
- Marketing list. A checkbox, or a pre-ticked consent, adds you to newsletters.
- Analytics and retargeting. The address may be hashed and matched to ad platforms.
- Partners. Some services share or sell lists, depending on their policy and your consent.
Why it keeps growing
Each service you sign up with can start its own drip campaign. Ten signups become ten streams of mail, and unsubscribing from each one is manual work.
The simple way to contain it
Give throwaway addresses to services you are only trying, and a permanent address only to services you actually use. When the trial ends, the disposable address expires and its marketing mail has nowhere to go.
A temporary inbox is not about hiding — it is about keeping the noise out of the inbox you rely on.
