Temporary email for developers: automation and testing
Using throwaway inboxes in scripts and CI
Developers reach for disposable email for the same reason QA teams do: signup flows need a fresh address every run. The difference is that developers want it scriptable, so the whole loop can run unattended.
The pattern
- Create a new address for the run.
- Submit the signup form with that address.
- Poll for the incoming message.
- Extract the code or link, complete the flow, assert the result.
What to watch for
- Timing. Verification mail can take a few seconds; poll with a timeout instead of sleeping a fixed amount.
- Isolation. One address per test case keeps assertions independent.
- Secrets. Never send real credentials or personal data through a disposable inbox — it is public by design.
- Rate limits. Do not hammer resend endpoints; treat them like any other rate-limited API.
Where a browser workflow still helps
For exploratory testing and one-off checks, the TMPMailer inbox is faster than wiring a script. Use the browser for exploration and automation for regression, and keep the two paths testing the same assertions.
Pair disposable addresses with seeded fixture accounts: fixtures cover the long-lived state, and the temporary inbox covers the throwaway checks in between. That combination keeps suites fast without leaving junk accounts behind.
