How long does a temporary email address last?

Lifetime, expiry, and what happens when it disappears

“Temporary” means exactly that: these addresses are built to disappear. The exact lifetime varies, but the principle is the same everywhere — treat a disposable address as short-lived and never as something you can recover later.

Typical lifetimes

  • Minutes to hours for open, no-signup inboxes. Perfect for a single verification.
  • Longer if the service keeps a mailbox alive while it is in use, then clears it afterwards.
  • Until expiry or cleanup on services that delete old messages on a schedule.

What “expired” really means

Once an address or mailbox is cleared, the messages are gone. There is no archive and no reset link. If an account was created with that address, you may lose the ability to recover it or receive future notifications.

Choose the lifetime to match your intent

  • A one-off confirmation → a disposable address is ideal.
  • A newsletter or store account you keep → an alias you control is better.
  • Anything with money, identity, or data you need → a permanent address, always.

The practical rule: if losing access tomorrow would inconvenience you, do not use a temporary address. If losing it tomorrow is the whole point, it is the right tool.
